The jewel of the Kena Upaniṣad. After all the denials — not speech, not mind, not eye, not ear, not breath, not "what men here worship" — the Upaniṣad at last gives a positive name. And that name is about love: tad vanam, from the root √van — "to love, to desire, to long for": "That towards which love [reaches]", the Desirable, the Beloved of everything living. Not "the Almighty" — might has just been dethroned by a blade of grass; not "the All-knowing" — knowledge was taken apart in the second khaṇḍa. The last word about Brahman is that He is infinitely dear.
tadvanam ity upāsitavyam — "as Tadvana He is to be worshipped": here at last is the resolution of the first khaṇḍa's refrain. "Not what men here worship" did not abolish worship — it was waiting for this name. He is to be worshipped not as a force, not as a principle, but as the Desired One — with the heart's attraction; adoration that accords with His deepest name simply is love. So the road of the Upaniṣad is completed: from "by whom is the mind sent forth?" through "not this, not this" to "call Him the Beloved".
And the fruit is commensurate: sarvāṇi bhūtāni saṁvāñchanti — "all beings will yearn for him", will be drawn to the knower. He who has come to love the All-dear becomes dear to all: through him beings scent Him towards whom everything living reaches — as men are drawn to a window in which a light is standing. This chimes with the Īśa Upaniṣad (mantras 6–7): there, one who sees Him in all was freed from revulsion; here, he becomes beloved of all. Perfection does not fence one off from beings — it makes one their own.
