Note that in this passage the list of participles adds viṣa-hāriṇī, “carrying away poison,” absent from the earlier ones. A small detail, but it shows how such texts were compiled: the refrain was not fixed word for word, and a copyist would add or drop. Let us add what deserves saying about the order of the participles, for it is no accident.
Viṣa-rūpiṇī — “taking the form of poison”: the knowledge becomes poison, that is, enters into it. Viṣa-dūṣiṇī — “corrupting”: renders the poison useless. Viṣa-śoṣiṇī — “drying up”: takes away its moisture.
Viṣa-nāśinī — “destroying.” Viṣa-hāriṇī — “carrying away”: removes what remains. That is, five actions are listed in order: to enter, to corrupt, to dry up, to destroy, to carry away.
This order, to my mind, is deliberate and shows that the charm was composed by someone who thought of the matter as work, not as a miracle. The Vaiṣṇava side sees nothing wrong in such an order and speaks itself of gradualness; and that obstacles diminish one at a time, not falling away all at once, was discussed reading the Yājñavalkya (12). Let us add the first of the five, for it is more curious than the rest: it is said that the knowledge takes the form of poison.
That is, it conquers not from without, but from within; and this image exists in its own literature too — medicine works by entering the body, not by lying beside it.
