Translation

'Once, Ruru, having seen Pramadvara in that hermitage, became, as they say, overcome by the god of love (Madana), even though he was of righteous soul. Then that son of Bhrigu made it known to his father through his friends; and Pramati, upon hearing of it, came to the illustrious Sthulakesha. And the father gave that maiden Pramadvara to Ruru [in marriage], setting the wedding in advance — for the day of the nakshatra whose deity is Bhaga. But when, some days later, the wedding drew near, that beautiful maiden, playing with her friends, did not notice a sleeping serpent stretched across [her path]. Driven by fate, [walking] toward her own death, she stepped on it with her foot. And that [serpent], moved by the law of time (kala-dharma), sank its venomous fangs into her body. Bitten, she fell to the ground at once, her senses gone. And even lifeless, she was [still] of the most beautiful form, though she could no longer be seen [as living]; cast down upon the ground and afflicted by the serpent's venom, she [seemed] as though asleep, and became still more enchanting, slender-waisted.'
