Translation

Sūta said: "Having heard those words of the serpent, Ruru then did not kill him, taking the ḍuṇḍubha for some sage, [while the snake was] terrified [for his life]. And the venerable Ruru said to him, as though soothing him: 'Tell me freely, O serpent: who are you, who has come into this altered form?'" The serpent said: "I was once, O Ruru, a sage named Sahasrapāt; I am the one who, by a brahmin's curse, has fallen into serpent form." Ruru said: "Why did the enraged brahmin curse you, O best of serpents? And how long will this body remain [with you]?"
