The conclusion of Garuda’s story reveals the triumph of dharma and the subtle justice of Providence. Garuda’s mother is freed — filial love and selfless exertion have reached their goal. The serpents, who had enslaved Vinata through deceit, are left with nothing: their greed for immortality goes unsatisfied and instead leaves them with a lasting mark — the forked tongue, a sign of duplicity and cunning. The verse shows that deceit returns upon the deceiver and leaves a visible seal on him. Notably, the amrita, by merely touching the darbha grass, sanctified it forever — hence the sacredness of kusha grass in rituals: even contact with what is supreme sanctifies. Here lies the truth that closeness to the divine (to amrita, and in the higher sense, to the Lord) purifies and sanctifies, while greedy grasping after it leaves only the mark of vice. Garuda, having fulfilled his duty, gains both fame and his mother’s joy, and — above all, as already disclosed — eternal service to the Lord. The closing praise of the tale promises that whoever hears the story of Garuda attains merit and heaven — for hearing of the deeds of the Lord’s servant is itself purification and merit.
