This chapter, a seemingly simple list of names at first glance, carries its own meaning. Shaunaka’s request to hear the names of the serpents, and Suta’s readiness to name the foremost among them, show the reverent thoroughness of the sacred tradition: nothing in the narrative of creation is considered insignificant, and even genealogies and names are preserved and handed down. Here it becomes clear that naming itself (nama) partakes of the sacred: to speak the names of beings caught up in the cosmic drama is part of remembering the Lord’s design. Notable, too, is Suta’s humility in acknowledging that all the serpents cannot be counted: the Lord’s creation is innumerable, and even the narrator does not grasp its fullness. Thus the list of names becomes a reminder of the boundlessness of creation, and of how human knowledge, however vast, only touches the edge of the infinite diversity of the Supreme’s creation.
