Here a fateful curse is set in motion — the fruit of anger clouded by pride. Śṛṅgī, the young ascetic, on learning of the affront to his father, does not inquire into the circumstances — that the king had acted in exhaustion, that his father himself had kept silent — but at once, "blazing with fury," curses the king to death. Thus the text shows the gravest danger of anger (krodha): it strips away discernment and drives one to disproportionate retribution. It is telling that Śṛṅgī boasts of "the power of his own austerity" — that is, he squanders on a curse the spiritual merit accumulated through tapas; anger devours the fruits of his asceticism. Here is a warning: what austerity has gathered burns away in a single flash of anger, as scripture teaches elsewhere — the one who curses spends his own spiritual strength. And there is a further lesson: judgment and punishment must come through discernment, not impulse; a curse pronounced without inquiring into guilt and without allowance for the king’s weakness is itself adharma, though clothed in the appearance of righteous indignation. Thus from a youth’s pride and anger is born the death of a great king — and the whole chain of misfortunes that follows.
