This scene is the same vision that was given at the beginning of the tale (ch. 13), but now shown in its full extent: the ascetic Jaratkaru meets his ancestors hanging over the abyss. The image is deep and universal: the single root of grass the forefathers cling to is ceaselessly gnawed by a mouse -- time (kala); and when the last thread snaps, the souls will fall into hell. Thus the text shows the fragility of a family's existence and the relentlessness of time. Jaratkaru's compassion stands out sharply: the moment he sees the suffering ones, he -- himself an exhausted ascetic -- at once offers them a share of his hard-won austerity, a quarter, a third, a half. Here the ascetic's generosity reveals itself: the fruits of years of asceticism he is ready to give away for the salvation of others. This is the ideal of compassion (karuna), which spares not even one's own merit to ease another's distress. But, as the ancestors' answer will reveal, there is a need that no amount of austerity can cover -- the need for the continuation of the line and of dharma; and this points to something greater than personal asceticism.
