The birth and growth of Āstīka show how a savior appointed from above prepares for his service. His name ‘Āstīka’ is significant — ‘[he at whose conception the father said] there is’: the very name carries an affirmation of being and of hope, as if declaring that salvation ‘is,’ that it is assured. There is a deeper meaning here too: ‘āstika’ also means ‘a believer,’ one who affirms [the existence of God and] the Highest; and the appointed savior bears the very name of faith. It is remarkable that Āstīka, though born of a serpent mother, grows up righteous, studies the Vedas, and is filled with goodness — for purity does not depend on birth but is determined by aspiration and upbringing in dharma. He ‘removes the fear of father and mother’ — that is, he fulfills a son's duty, [delivering] his ancestors [from calamity], just as had been foretold. Thus the scripture prepares the appearance of one who, by mercy and the power of dharma, will save the doomed; and the very joy of the serpents as they watch the boy grow is a foretoken of the deliverance to come. The savior grows unseen, [preparing] for the hour when his mercy will avert destruction.
