Shakuntala said: 'Thus entreated by her, Shakra gave the command to the ever-moving wind-god; and then Menaka set out together with the wind. And there, timid, Menaka saw in the hermitage Vishvamitra, his sins burned away by austerity, performing his austerities. She, bowing to him, began to play near the sage; and the wind carried off her garment, white as the moon. That fair-faced one, snatching at the garment, with a bashful, half-mocking air toward the wind, hastened toward the ground. The best of sages then saw Menaka -- grasping after her garment, flustered, of indescribable age and beauty, uncovered. That bull among brahmins, seeing her beauty and virtues, falling under the sway of desire, inclined his heart to union with her. He invited her, and the blameless one consented; and the two of them dwelt long in that forest, delighting as they wished, and the long span passed for them as a single day. That sage, on the lovely slope of the Himalayas, by the river Malini, begot upon Menaka Shakuntala. And Menaka, abandoning the newborn child by the river Malini, her task accomplished, at once departed for Shakra's assembly.'
