यः परेषां नरो नित्यम् अतिवादांस् तितिक्षति ॥
देवयानि विजानीहि तेन सर्वम् इदं जितम् ॥
यः समुत्पतितं क्रोधं निगृह्णाति हयं यथा ॥
स यन्तेत्य् उच्यते सद्भिर् न यो रश्मिषु लम्बते ॥
यः समुत्पतितं क्रोधम् अक्रोधेन निरस्यति ॥
देवयानि विजानीहि तेन सर्वम् इदं जितम् ॥
यः समुत्पतितं क्रोधं क्षमयेह निरस्यति ॥
यथोरगस् त्वचं जीर्णां स वै पुरुष उच्यते ॥
यः संधारयते मन्युं यो ऽतिवादांस् तितिक्षति ॥
यश् च तप्तो न तपति दृढं सो ऽर्थस्य भाजनम् ॥
यो यजेद् अपरिश्रान्तो मासि मासि शतं समाः ॥
न क्रुध्येद् यश् च सर्वस्य तयोर् अक्रोधनो ऽधिकः ॥
यत् कुमाराः कुमार्यश् च वैरं कुर्युर् अचेतसः ॥
न तत् प्राज्ञो ऽनुकुर्वीत विदुस् ते न बलाबलम् ॥

yaḥ pareṣāṃ naro nityam ativādāṃs titikṣati ||
devayāni vijānīhi tena sarvam idaṃ jitam ||
yaḥ samutpatitaṃ krodhaṃ nigṛhṇāti hayaṃ yathā ||
sa yantety ucyate sadbhir na yo raśmiṣu lambate ||
yaḥ samutpatitaṃ krodham akrodhena nirasyati ||
devayāni vijānīhi tena sarvam idaṃ jitam ||
yaḥ samutpatitaṃ krodhaṃ kṣamayeha nirasyati ||
yathoragas tvacaṃ jīrṇāṃ sa vai puruṣa ucyate ||
yaḥ saṃdhārayate manyuṃ yo 'tivādāṃs titikṣati ||
yaś ca tapto na tapati dṛḍhaṃ so 'rthasya bhājanam ||
yo yajed apariśrānto māsi māsi śataṃ samāḥ ||
na krudhyed yaś ca sarvasya tayor akrodhano 'dhikaḥ ||
yat kumārāḥ kumāryaś ca vairaṃ kuryur acetasaḥ ||
na tat prājño 'nukurvīta vidus te na balābalam ||

यः समुत्पतितं क्रोधं इह क्षमया निरस्यति यथा उरगः जीर्णां त्वचं सः वै पुरुषः उच्यतेyaḥ samutpatitaṃ krodhaṃ iha kṣamayā nirasyati yathā uragaḥ jīrṇāṃ tvacaṃ saḥ vai puruṣaḥ ucyateHe who dispels rising anger here with forbearance, as a serpent [sheds] its worn-out skin, he indeed is called a true man.
यः मन्युं संधारयते यः अतिवादान् तितिक्षति यः च तप्तः न तपति सः दृढं अर्थस्य भाजनम्yaḥ manyuṃ saṃdhārayate yaḥ ativādān titikṣati yaḥ ca taptaḥ na tapati saḥ dṛḍhaṃ arthasya bhājanamHe who restrains wrath, who endures insults, and who, though tormented himself, does not torment [in return] — he is a sure vessel of [every] good.
यः अपरिश्रान्तः मासि मासि शतं समाः यजेत् यः च सर्वस्य न क्रुध्येत् तयोः अक्रोधनः अधिकःyaḥ apariśrāntaḥ māsi māsi śataṃ samāḥ yajet yaḥ ca sarvasya na krudhyet tayoḥ akrodhanaḥ adhikaḥ[Of two —] he who, untiring, performs sacrifices month after month for a hundred years, and he who grows angry at no one — of these two, the one free from anger is greater.
अचेतसः कुमाराः कुमार्यः च यत् वैरं कुर्युः प्राज्ञः तत् न अनुकुर्वीत ते बलाबलं न विदुःacetasaḥ kumārāḥ kumāryaḥ ca yat vairaṃ kuryuḥ prājñaḥ tat na anukurvīta te balābalaṃ na viduḥThe enmity that thoughtless boys and girls create, the wise man should not imitate; they do not know [what] strength and weakness [are].

Translation

Shukra said: "O Devayani, know this: the man who constantly endures others' insults — by that, all this [the world] is conquered. He who curbs rising anger as [a charioteer curbs] a horse is called by the virtuous a true charioteer, not one who merely dangles on the reins. O Devayani, know this: he who dispels rising anger with freedom from anger — by that, all this is conquered. He who dispels rising anger here with forbearance, as a serpent sheds its worn-out skin, he indeed is called a true man. He who restrains wrath, who endures insults, and who, though tormented himself, does not torment in return — he is a sure vessel of every good. Of two — he who, untiring, performs sacrifices month after month for a hundred years, and he who grows angry at no one — of these two, the one free from anger is greater.
