ततः संहृत्य विपुलं तद् वपुः कामवर्धितम् ॥
भीमसेनं पुनर् दोर्भ्यां पर्यष्वजत वानरः ॥
परिष्वक्तस्य तस्याशु भ्रात्रा भीमस्य भारत ॥
श्रमो नाशम् उपागच्छत् सर्वं चासीत् प्रदक्षिणम् ॥
ततः पुनर् अथोवाच पर्यश्रुनयनो हरिः ॥
भीमम् आभाष्य सौहार्दाद् बाष्पगद्गदया गिरा ॥
गच्छ वीर स्वम् आवासं स्मर्तव्यो ऽस्मि कथान्तरे ॥
इहस्थश् च कुरुश्रेष्ठ न निवेद्यो ऽस्मि कस्य चित् ॥
धनदस्यालयाच् चापि विसृष्टानां महाबल ॥
देशकाल इहायातुं देवगन्धर्वयोषिताम् ॥
ममापि सफलं चक्षुः स्मारितश् चास्मि राघवम् ॥
मानुषं गात्रसंस्पर्शं गत्वा भीम त्वया सह ॥
तद् अस्मद्दर्शनं वीर कौन्तेयामोघम् अस्तु ते ॥
भ्रातृत्वं त्वं पुरस्कृत्य वरं वरय भारत ॥
यदि तावन् मया क्षुद्रा गत्वा वारणसाह्वयम् ॥
धार्तराष्ट्रा निहन्तव्या यावद् एतत् करोम्य् अहम् ॥
शिलया नगरं वा तन् मर्दितव्यं मया यदि ॥
यावद् अद्य करोम्य् एतत् कामं तव महाबल ॥
भीमसेनस् तु तद् वाक्यं श्रुत्वा तस्य महात्मनः ॥
प्रत्युवाच हनूमन्तं प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना ॥
कृतम् एव त्वया सर्वं मम वानरपुंगव ॥
स्वस्ति ते ऽस्तु महाबाहो क्षामये त्वां प्रसीद मे ॥
सनाथाः पाण्डवाः सर्वे त्वया नाथेन वीर्यवन् ॥
तवैव तेजसा सर्वान् विजेष्यामो वयं रिपून् ॥
एवम् उक्तस् तु हनुमान् भीमसेनम् अभाषत ॥
भ्रातृत्वात् सौहृदाच् चापि करिष्यामि तव प्रियम् ॥
चमूं विगाह्य शत्रूणां शरशक्तिसमाकुलाम् ॥
यदा सिंहरवं वीर करिष्यसि महाबल ॥
तदाहं बृंहयिष्यामि स्वरवेण रवं तव ॥
विजयस्य ध्वजस्थश् च नादान् मोक्ष्यामि दारुणान् ॥
शत्रूणां ते प्राणहरान् इत्य् उक्त्वान्तरधीयत ॥

deśakāla ihāyātuṃ devagandharvayoṣitām ||
mamāpi saphalaṃ cakṣuḥ smāritaś cāsmi rāghavam ||
mānuṣaṃ gātrasaṃsparśaṃ gatvā bhīma tvayā saha ||
tad asmaddarśanaṃ vīra kaunteyāmogham astu te ||
bhrātṛtvaṃ tvaṃ puraskṛtya varaṃ varaya bhārata ||
yadi tāvan mayā kṣudrā gatvā vāraṇasāhvayam ||
dhārtarāṣṭrā nihantavyā yāvad etat karomy aham ||
śilayā nagaraṃ vā tan marditavyaṃ mayā yadi ||
yāvad adya karomy etat kāmaṃ tava mahābala ||
bhīmasenas tu tad vākyaṃ śrutvā tasya mahātmanaḥ ||
pratyuvāca hanūmantaṃ prahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā ||
kṛtam eva tvayā sarvaṃ mama vānarapuṃgava ||
svasti te 'stu mahābāho kṣāmaye tvāṃ prasīda me ||
sanāthāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sarve tvayā nāthena vīryavan ||
tavaiva tejasā sarvān vijeṣyāmo vayaṃ ripūn ||
evam uktas tu hanumān bhīmasenam abhāṣata ||
bhrātṛtvāt sauhṛdāc cāpi kariṣyāmi tava priyam ||
camūṃ vigāhya śatrūṇāṃ śaraśaktisamākulām ||
yadā siṃharavaṃ vīra kariṣyasi mahābala ||
tadāhaṃ bṛṃhayiṣyāmi svaraveṇa ravaṃ tava ||
vijayasya dhvajasthaś ca nādān mokṣyāmi dāruṇān ||

Translation

Vaishampayana said: "Then the monkey drew in that vast body, grown at will, and again embraced Bhimasena with his arms. When Bhima was embraced by his brother, Bharata, his weariness quickly vanished, and everything became auspicious. Then Hari spoke again to Bhima, his eyes filled with tears; out of affection he spoke in a voice broken by tears: 'Go, hero, to your dwelling. Remember me in your tales. But, best of the Kurus, tell no one that I am here. Now is the time and place for divine women and the women of the Gandharvas to come here from the abode of Dhanada, mighty one. My own sight, too, has become fruitful: through the human touch of your body, Bhima, I have remembered Raghava. Let this meeting of ours, hero, not be in vain for you. Placing brotherhood first, choose a boon, Bharata. If need be, I will go to Varanasahva and slay the wretched sons of Dhritarashtra, so long as I am able to do this. Or, if need be, I will crush that city with a boulder. Today, mighty one, I will grant this wish of yours.' Hearing the words of the great-souled Hanuman, Bhimasena answered him with a joyful heart: 'You have already done everything for me, best of monkeys. Blessings upon you, mighty-armed one. Forgive me, be gracious to me. All the Pandavas have a protector in you, mighty one, and by your very splendor we shall conquer all our enemies.' So spoke Bhima, and Hanuman answered him: 'Out of brotherhood and friendship I will do what pleases you. When, hero, mighty one, you enter the enemy's army, filled with arrows and spears, and utter a lion's roar, then I will swell your roar with my own voice. And standing upon the banner of Vijaya, I will let loose terrible cries that will take the life of your enemies.' Having said this, he vanished."

Commentary

Hanuman could destroy the enemies himself, but Bhima chooses not to replace his own dharma but to receive support. Thus brotherhood becomes a blessing for the coming battle, not a flight from duty.
