As Kuvalashva set out, a great voice sounded in the sky: 'This glorious king's son shall become Dhundhumara.' The gods showered him with heavenly flowers, divine drums sounded of themselves, a cool wind blew, and Indra rained down, cleansing the earth of dust. In the sky appeared the celestial cars of the gods: the seers, together with the gods and gandharvas, wished to witness the battle between Kuvalashva and Dhundhu. The king, strengthened by Narayana, swiftly arrived at the place and commanded his sons to dig up the sandy ocean. After seven days they beheld the vast body of Dhundhu, hidden in the sands and blazing like the sun. The king's sons surrounded him and began to strike him with arrows, maces, clubs, spears, lances, and swords. Enraged, Dhundhu rose up, devoured their weapons, and, spewing forth fire like the fire at the end of the world, in a single instant burned all the king's sons to ashes. Then Kuvalashva confronted the awakened asura, absorbed the flood of water pouring from his body, by yoga quenched the fire with that water, and with the brahmastra burned the cruel danava for the safety of all the worlds. From that time on he became known by the name Dhundhumara.

Kuvalashva's victory does not undo the sacrifice of his sons. Great deeds of dharma often pass through grievous loss, yet the power of Narayana carries the protection of the world through to its end.
