Yudhishthira said: "Son, how can you speak thus of the Kauravas, who have come to us tormented by fear, seeking refuge, and fallen into distress? Among kinsmen there are divisions, quarrels, and prolonged enmity, Vrikodara, but the duty of kinship does not perish. When someone from outside seeks to harm the family, the worthy do not tolerate the family being trampled by an outsider. This man of evil mind knew that we have long dwelt here, and, scorning us, did us this unpleasant deed. But because of Duryodhana's capture by the Gandharva in battle, and because of the outsiders' touching of the women, our family is struck. For the sake of protecting those who have come for refuge, and for the sake of saving our family, rise up, tigers among men, and make ready swiftly. Arjuna, the twins, and you, unconquered Bhima, free Suyodhana, son of Dhritarashtra, who is being led away. Here are chariots furnished with every weapon, with golden banners, yoked with charioteers headed by Indrasena. Mount them and strive tirelessly to free Suyodhana, fighting the Gandharvas. Every kshatriya should, to the best of his strength, protect one who has come here for refuge; how much more should you, Vrikodara. Who else, seeing even an enemy with joined palms seeking refuge, would not rush to protect him? The giving of a boon, a kingdom, the birth of a son, and the freeing of an enemy from distress -- these three, and this one, are equal. What could be higher than this, that Suyodhana, fallen into distress, seeks his life relying on the strength of your arms? I myself would run to him, Vrikodara, were it not for this rite now under way; here I have no doubt. First, Bhima, strive by every means to free Suyodhana through peace. If the king of the Gandharvas will not agree to peace, free Suyodhana by gentle force. But if even after gentle battle he does not release the Kauravas, they must be freed by every means, subduing those who obstruct. This much alone can I charge you with, Vrikodara, while my rite continues, O Bharata."

Yudhishthira here articulates a difficult dharma: an enemy remains a kinsman, and one who comes seeking protection cannot be turned away.
