जानामि कृष्णे विदितं ममैतद्; यथाविधास् ते नरदेवपुत्राः ॥
न त्व् एवम् एतेन विभीषणेन; शक्या वयं त्रासयितुं त्वयाद्य ॥
वयं पुनः सप्तदशेषु कृष्णे; कुलेषु सर्वे ऽनवमेषु जाताः ॥
षड्भ्यो गुणेभ्यो ऽभ्यधिका विहीनान्; मन्यामहे द्रौपदि पाण्डुपुत्रान् ॥
सा क्षिप्रम् आतिष्ठ गजं रथं वा; न वाक्यमात्रेण वयं हि शक्याः ॥
आशंस वा त्वं कृपणं वदन्ती; सौवीरराजस्य पुनः प्रसादम् ॥

महाबला किं त्व् इह दुर्बलेव; सौवीरराजस्य मताहम् अस्मि ॥
याहं प्रमाथाद् इह संप्रतीता; सौवीरराजं कृपणं वदेयम् ॥
यस्या हि कृष्णौ पदवीं चरेतां; समास्थिताव् एकरथे सहायौ ॥
इन्द्रो ऽपि तां नापहरेत् कथं चिन्; मनुष्यमात्रः कृपणः कुतो ऽन्यः ॥
यदा किरीटी परवीरघाती; निघ्नन् रथस्थो द्विषतां मनांसि ॥
मदन्तरे त्वद्ध्वजिनीं प्रवेष्टा; कक्षं दहन्न् अग्निर् इवोष्णगेषु ॥
जनार्दनस्यानुगा वृष्णिवीरा; महेष्वासाः केकयाश् चापि सर्वे ॥
एते हि सर्वे मम राजपुत्राः; प्रहृष्टरूपाः पदवीं चरेयुः ॥
मौर्वीविसृष्टाः स्तनयित्नुघोषा; गाण्डीवमुक्तास् त्व् अतिवेगवन्तः ॥
हस्तं समाहत्य धनंजयस्य; भीमाः शब्दं घोरतरं नदन्ति ॥
गाण्डीवमुक्तांश् च महाशरौघान्; पतंगसंघान् इव शीघ्रवेगान् ॥
सशङ्खघोषः सतलत्रघोषो; गाण्डीवधन्वा मुहुर् उद्वमंश् च ॥
यदा शरान् अर्पयिता तवोरसि; तदा मनस् ते किम् इवाभविष्यत् ॥
गदाहस्तं भीमम् अभिद्रवन्तं; माद्रीपुत्रौ संपतन्तौ दिशश् च ॥
अमर्षजं क्रोधविषं वमन्तौ; दृष्ट्वा चिरं तापम् उपैष्यसे ऽधम ॥
यथा चाहं नातिचरे कथं चित्; पतीन् महार्हान् मनसापि जातु ॥
तेनाद्य सत्येन वशीकृतं त्वां; द्रष्टास्मि पार्थैः परिकृष्यमाणम् ॥
न संभ्रमं गन्तुम् अहं हि शक्ष्ये; त्वया नृशंसेन विकृष्यमाणा ॥
समागताहं हि कुरुप्रवीरैः; पुनर् वनं काम्यकम् आगता च ॥

yasyā hi kṛṣṇau padavīṃ caretāṃ; samāsthitāv ekarathe sahāyau ||
indro 'pi tāṃ nāpaharet kathaṃ cin; manuṣyamātraḥ kṛpaṇaḥ kuto 'nyaḥ ||
yadā kirīṭī paravīraghātī; nighnan rathastho dviṣatāṃ manāṃsi ||
madantare tvaddhvajinīṃ praveṣṭā; kakṣaṃ dahann agnir ivoṣṇageṣu ||
janārdanasyānugā vṛṣṇivīrā; maheṣvāsāḥ kekayāś cāpi sarve ||
ete hi sarve mama rājaputrāḥ; prahṛṣṭarūpāḥ padavīṃ careyuḥ ||

yathā cāhaṃ nāticare kathaṃ cit; patīn mahārhān manasāpi jātu ||
tenādya satyena vaśīkṛtaṃ tvāṃ; draṣṭāsmi pārthaiḥ parikṛṣyamāṇam ||

Translation

Jayadratha said: 'Krishna, I know what your royal husbands are like. Today you cannot frighten us with this intimidation. All of us were born in seventeen lineages with no inferiors, and by our six virtues we consider the sons of Pandu beneath us. Quickly mount the elephant or the chariot. Words alone will not stop us. Or, calling yourself wretched, hope once more for the mercy of the king of Sauvira.' Draupadi answered: 'How is it that I, mighty in strength, am here reckoned by the king of Sauvira as though I were weak? Would I, confident against a violent assault, call the king of Sauvira wretched? If the two Krishnas, standing together as allies on a single chariot, follow my trail, not even Indra could carry me off, still less some wretched man. When Kiritin, slayer of enemy heroes, standing on his chariot, enters your army for my sake as fire burns dry brushwood in the hot season, what then will become of your mind? When the swift torrents of great arrows loosed from the Gandiva, with the roar of the bowstring and the ring of the finger-guards, pour forth again and again from the archer of the Gandiva and pierce your chest, what then will become of your mind? When you see Bhima with the mace in hand charging at you, and the sons of Madri swooping in from every side, spewing the venom of wrath born of indignation, you, base one, will burn for a long time at that sight. As I have never, even in thought, transgressed against my great and worthy husbands, by the power of that truth I shall today see the Parthas dragging you away. You, cruel one, will not be able to throw me into confusion by dragging me by force. I have already met the finest heroes of the Kurus and returned once more to the forest of Kamyaka.'

Commentary

Draupadi draws on the satya of her own fidelity. In the epic, such truth becomes a force that is already beginning to act against the assailant.
