Vaishampayana said: 'Jayadratha, seeing the two brothers with weapons raised, ran swiftly, not losing his composure, desiring life and greatly suffering. The mighty Bhimasena, seeing him running, descended from his chariot, rushed after him, and seized him by the hair, filled with impatience. Lifting him up in fury, he hurled the king to the ground, seized him by the throat, and began to beat him. When Jayadratha, coming to his senses again, tried to rise, the mighty-armed one struck him on the head with his foot while he groaned. Bhima drove his knee into him and struck him with his elbow; the king lost consciousness, worn out by the fiercest blows. Phalguna restrained the enraged Bhimasena: 'The king said this for the sake of Duhshala, O Kaurava.' Bhimasena said: 'This man of wicked conduct does not deserve to live after what he has done to me: the vilest of men has tormented Draupadi, who did not deserve it. What can I do, when the king is forever compassionate, and you always hem us in with a childish mind?' Having said this, Vrikodara, with a half-moon arrow, made five tufts on Jayadratha's head while he could barely speak. Having crippled the king, Vrikodara said: 'If you wish to live, fool, hear the condition I set forth: in every gathering and assembly you must say, "I am a slave." Thus I will grant you life. This is the rule for one defeated in battle.' 'So be it,' said King Jayadratha, barely alive, to the tiger among men, Bhima, resplendent in battle. Then Partha Vrikodara bound him, twitching, half-unconscious and covered in dust, and set him upon the chariot. Mounting that chariot, Bhima, following Partha, came to Yudhishthira, who was in the midst of the hermitage. Bhima showed Jayadratha in that state; the king, seeing him, laughed and said, 'Let him be released.' Bhima said to the king: 'Tell Draupadi: this sinner in mind has become a slave of the Pandus.' Then the eldest brother said to him with affection: 'Release this man of base conduct, if we are an authority for you.' Draupadi, looking at Yudhishthira, said to Bhima: 'Let this slave of the king, with the five tufts you have made, be released.'

Jayadratha's punishment preserves the memory of his crime through public shame. Mercy does not cancel justice, but it holds Bhima back from killing a kinsman of the Kurus.
