'As long as you live, do not lose hope: bear the burden for the sake of good. Do not belittle yourself, and do not sustain yourself with trifles. Make your mind auspicious; do not fear — steady yourself. Rise, O faint-hearted one, do not lie thus defeated, delighting all your enemies, devoid of honor and bringing grief to your kin. A puny streamlet is easily filled, and a mouse's handful is soon full; so too the faint-hearted man is content with even the trifling. Better, breaking the enemy's fang, to go to death like a swift horse; or, even risking your life, show valor. Like a hawk, seek out the gap in your enemy, circling about, crying out or silent, in the sky and unafraid.'

Vidura sets faint-hearted contentment with little against kshatriya resolve. Even the risk of death is preferable to a life that feeds the joy of enemies and the grief of kin.
