The guards of Bhishma's rear, O lord of men, were your sons: Duhshasana, Durvishaha, Durmukha, Duhsaha, Vivimshati, Chitrasena, the great warrior Vikarna, Satyavrata, Purumitra, Jaya, Bhurishravas, and Shala. Behind them followed twenty thousand chariots, along with the Abhishahas, Shurasenas, Shibis, Vasatis, Shalvas, Matsyas, Ambashthas, Trigartas, Kekayas, Sauviras, Kitavas, the eastern peoples, and the western and northern Malavas. These twelve nations, all heroes ready to give up the body, guarded the grandsire with a mighty line of chariots.

Bhishma is surrounded not by a token guard but by entire peoples and by the sons of Dhritarashtra. This underscores once more the elder's strategic weight: as long as he stands, the full might of the Kauravas gathers around him, and his protection becomes the concern of the whole army.
