Bhimasena fought with your son Duryodhana, proud, arrogant, a great charioteer nursing an old enmity. These two tigers among men, the mighty chief warriors of the Kuru race, showered each other with streams of arrows on the battlefield. All beings, O Bharata, marveled at the sight of these two great, skillful warriors fighting in wondrous ways. Duhshasana, advancing against the great charioteer Nakula, pierced him with many sharp arrows striking his vital points. But the son of Madri, as if laughing, cut down his banner and his bow with sharp arrows, and then struck him with twenty-five small arrows. Your indomitable son, in the great battle, cut the yoke of Nakula's chariot with arrows and felled his banner. Durmukha, going forth against the mighty Sahadeva, struck him with a shower of arrows while he strove valiantly in the great battle. Then the hero Sahadeva, in the great battle, struck down Durmukha's charioteer with an exceedingly sharp arrow. Having come together, these two, maddened by battle and seeking retribution, terrified one another with fearsome arrows. King Yudhishthira himself advanced upon the king of Madra. The lord of Madra cut his bow in two, O venerable one. Casting aside the broken bow, Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, took up another, swifter and more powerful, and, enraged, covered the lord of Madra with well-feathered arrows, crying, "Stand! Stand!""

These duels unfold not as impersonal slaughter but as a clash of old bonds: brothers, kinsmen, teachers, and allies meet in combat. The dharma of war does not remove the pain of kinship here; it only sharpens it.
