संजय उवाच
कृते ऽवहारे सैन्यानां प्रथमे भरतर्षभ ॥
भीष्मे च युधि संरब्धे हृष्टे दुर्योधने तथा ॥
धर्मराजस् ततस् तूर्णम् अभिगम्य जनार्दनम् ॥
भ्रातृभिः सहितः सर्वैः सर्वैश् चैव जनेश्वरैः ॥
शुचा परमया युक्तश् चिन्तयानः पराजयम् ॥
वार्ष्णेयम् अब्रवीद् राजन् दृष्ट्वा भीष्मस्य विक्रमम् ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
kṛte 'vahāre sainyānāṃ prathame bharatarṣabha ||
bhīṣme ca yudhi saṃrabdhe hṛṣṭe duryodhane tathā ||
dharmarājas tatas tūrṇam abhigamya janārdanam ||
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ sarvaiś caiva janeśvaraiḥ ||
śucā paramayā yuktaś cintayānaḥ parājayam ||
vārṣṇeyam abravīd rājan dṛṣṭvā bhīṣmasya vikramam ||
Sanjaya said: 'When, after the first day's battle, the withdrawal of the troops had been made, O best of the Bharatas, Bhishma still raged in the fight while Duryodhana rejoiced. Then Dharmaraja, swiftly approaching Janardana together with all his brothers and all the kings, overcome by the greatest sorrow and brooding over the defeat, spoke to the Varshneya, O king, having seen Bhishma's valor.'
