संजय उवाच
आत्मदोषात् त्वया राजन् प्राप्तं व्यसनम् ईदृशम् ॥
न हि दुर्योधनस् तानि पश्यते भरतर्षभ ॥
यानि त्वं दृष्टवान् राजन् धर्मसंकरकारिते ॥
तव दोषात् पुरा वृत्तं द्यूतम् एतद् विशां पते ॥
तव दोषेण युद्धं च प्रवृत्तं सह पाण्डवैः ॥
त्वम् एवाद्य फलं भुङ्क्ष्व कृत्वा किल्बिषम् आत्मना ॥
आत्मना हि कृतं कर्म आत्मनैवोपभुज्यते ॥
इह वा प्रेत्य वा राजंस् त्वया प्राप्तं यथातथम् ॥
तस्माद् राजन् स्थिरो भूत्वा प्राप्येदं व्यसनं महत् ॥
शृणु युद्धं यथावृत्तं शंसतो मम मारिष ॥
भीमसेनस् तु निशितैर् बाणैर् भित्त्वा महाचमूम् ॥
आससाद ततो वीरः सर्वान् दुर्योधनानुजान् ॥
दुःशासनं दुर्विषहं दुःसहं दुर्मदं जयम् ॥
जयत्सेनं विकर्णं च चित्रसेनं सुदर्शनम् ॥
चारुचित्रं सुवर्माणं दुष्कर्णं कर्णम् एव च ॥
एतान् अन्यांश् च सुबहून् समीपस्थान् महारथान् ॥
धार्तराष्ट्रान् सुसंक्रुद्धान् दृष्ट्वा भीमो महाबलः ॥
भीष्मेण समरे गुप्तां प्रविवेश महाचमूम् ॥
अथाह्वयन्त ते ऽन्योन्यम् अयं प्राप्तो वृकोदरः ॥
जीवग्राहं निगृह्णीमो वयम् एनं नराधिपाः ॥
स तैः परिवृतः पार्थो भ्रातृभिः कृतनिश्चयैः ॥
प्रजासंहरणे सूर्यः क्रूरैर् इव महाग्रहैः ॥
संप्राप्य मध्यं व्यूहस्य न भीः पाण्डवम् आविशत् ॥
यथा देवासुरे युद्धे महेन्द्रः प्राप्य दानवान् ॥
ततः शतसहस्राणि रथिनां सर्वशः प्रभो ॥
छादयानं शरैर् घोरैस् तम् एकम् अनुवव्रिरे ॥
स तेषां प्रवरान् योधान् हस्त्यश्वरथसादिनः ॥
जघान समरे शूरो धार्तराष्ट्रान् अचिन्तयन् ॥
तेषां व्यवसितं ज्ञात्वा भीमसेनो जिघृक्षताम् ॥
समस्तानां वधे राजन् मतिं चक्रे महामनाः ॥
ततो रथं समुत्सृज्य गदाम् आदाय पाण्डवः ॥
जघान धार्तराष्ट्राणां तं बलौघमहार्णवम् ॥

na hi duryodhanas tāni paśyate bharatarṣabha ||
yāni tvaṃ dṛṣṭavān rājan dharmasaṃkarakārite ||
tava doṣāt purā vṛttaṃ dyūtam etad viśāṃ pate ||
tava doṣeṇa yuddhaṃ ca pravṛttaṃ saha pāṇḍavaiḥ ||
tvam evādya phalaṃ bhuṅkṣva kṛtvā kilbiṣam ātmanā ||
ātmanā hi kṛtaṃ karma ātmanaivopabhujyate ||
iha vā pretya vā rājaṃs tvayā prāptaṃ yathātatham ||
tasmād rājan sthiro bhūtvā prāpyedaṃ vyasanaṃ mahat ||
śṛṇu yuddhaṃ yathāvṛttaṃ śaṃsato mama māriṣa ||
bhīmasenas tu niśitair bāṇair bhittvā mahācamūm ||
āsasāda tato vīraḥ sarvān duryodhanānujān ||
duḥśāsanaṃ durviṣahaṃ duḥsahaṃ durmadaṃ jayam ||
jayatsenaṃ vikarṇaṃ ca citrasenaṃ sudarśanam ||
cārucitraṃ suvarmāṇaṃ duṣkarṇaṃ karṇam eva ca ||
etān anyāṃś ca subahūn samīpasthān mahārathān ||
dhārtarāṣṭrān susaṃkruddhān dṛṣṭvā bhīmo mahābalaḥ ||
bhīṣmeṇa samare guptāṃ praviveśa mahācamūm ||
athāhvayanta te 'nyonyam ayaṃ prāpto vṛkodaraḥ ||
jīvagrāhaṃ nigṛhṇīmo vayam enaṃ narādhipāḥ ||
sa taiḥ parivṛtaḥ pārtho bhrātṛbhiḥ kṛtaniścayaiḥ ||
prajāsaṃharaṇe sūryaḥ krūrair iva mahāgrahaiḥ ||
saṃprāpya madhyaṃ vyūhasya na bhīḥ pāṇḍavam āviśat ||
yathā devāsure yuddhe mahendraḥ prāpya dānavān ||
tataḥ śatasahasrāṇi rathināṃ sarvaśaḥ prabho ||
chādayānaṃ śarair ghorais tam ekam anuvavrire ||
sa teṣāṃ pravarān yodhān hastyaśvarathasādinaḥ ||
jaghāna samare śūro dhārtarāṣṭrān acintayan ||
teṣāṃ vyavasitaṃ jñātvā bhīmaseno jighṛkṣatām ||
samastānāṃ vadhe rājan matiṃ cakre mahāmanāḥ ||
tato rathaṃ samutsṛjya gadām ādāya pāṇḍavaḥ ||
jaghāna dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ taṃ balaughamahārṇavam ||
Sanjaya said: 'Because of your own fault, o king, such calamity has come upon you. Duryodhana, best of the Bharatas, does not see what you have seen, now that dharma has been confounded and distorted. By your fault the game of dice took place before, lord of men; by your fault the war with the Pandavas began. Now taste the fruit yourself, for you yourself committed the sin. A deed done by oneself is experienced by oneself alone — here or after death; you, o king, have received exactly what was due to you. Therefore, having met this great calamity, be steadfast and listen, o worthy one, as I recount how the battle actually went. Bhimasena, with sharp arrows, cut through the great army and drew near to all the younger brothers of Duryodhana: Duhshasana, Durvishaha, Duhsaha, Durmada, Jaya, Jayatsena, Vikarna, Chitrasena, Sudarshana, Charuchitra, Suvarman, Dushkarna, Karna, and many other great chariot-warriors standing nearby. Seeing the enraged Dhartarashtras, mighty Bhima entered the vast army that Bhishma was guarding in battle. They began calling to one another: 'Here comes Vrikodara! Let us seize him alive, o kings!' Surrounded by these resolute brothers, Partha was like the sun in the hour when beings perish, encircled by cruel great planets. Having reached the middle of the formation, the Pandava felt no fear, like Mahendra amid the danavas in the war of gods and asuras. Then hundreds of thousands of chariot-warriors closed in around him alone from every side while he covered them with terrible arrows. In the battle the hero struck down their finest warriors — riders on elephants, horses, and chariots — without regard for the Dhartarashtras. Perceiving that they meant to capture him, the magnanimous Bhimasena resolved to destroy them all. Then the Pandava abandoned his chariot, took up his mace, and began to smite that great ocean of the Dhartarashtra army.'
