संजय उवाच
इदं तत् समनुप्राप्तं क्षत्तुर् वचनम् उत्तमम् ॥
न बुद्धवान् असि विभो प्रोच्यमानं हितं तदा ॥
निवारय सुतान् द्यूतात् पाण्डवान् मा द्रुहेति च ॥
सुहृदां हितकामानां ब्रुवतां तत् तद् एव च ॥
न शुश्रूषसि यद् वाक्यं मर्त्यः पथ्यम् इवौषधम् ॥
तद् एव त्वाम् अनुप्राप्तं वचनं साधु भाषितम् ॥
विदुरद्रोणभीष्माणां तथान्येषां हितैषिणाम् ॥
अकृत्वा वचनं पथ्यं क्षयं गच्छन्ति कौरवाः ॥
तद् एतत् समतिक्रान्तं पूर्वम् एव विशां पते ॥
तस्मान् मे शृणु तत्त्वेन यथा युद्धम् अवर्तत ॥
मध्याह्ने सुमहारौद्रः संग्रामः समपद्यत ॥
लोकक्षयकरो राजंस् तन् मे निगदतः शृणु ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
idaṃ tat samanuprāptaṃ kṣattur vacanam uttamam ||
na buddhavān asi vibho procyamānaṃ hitaṃ tadā ||
nivāraya sutān dyūtāt pāṇḍavān mā druheti ca ||
suhṛdāṃ hitakāmānāṃ bruvatāṃ tat tad eva ca ||
na śuśrūṣasi yad vākyaṃ martyaḥ pathyam ivauṣadham ||
tad eva tvām anuprāptaṃ vacanaṃ sādhu bhāṣitam ||
viduradroṇabhīṣmāṇāṃ tathānyeṣāṃ hitaiṣiṇām ||
akṛtvā vacanaṃ pathyaṃ kṣayaṃ gacchanti kauravāḥ ||
tad etat samatikrāntaṃ pūrvam eva viśāṃ pate ||
tasmān me śṛṇu tattvena yathā yuddham avartata ||
madhyāhne sumahāraudraḥ saṃgrāmaḥ samapadyata ||
lokakṣayakaro rājaṃs tan me nigadataḥ śṛṇu ||
Sanjaya said: 'Now that excellent word of Kshattar-Vidura has overtaken you. You did not understand the benefit spoken to you then: "Restrain your sons from the game of dice, do not harm the Pandavas" — so said your friends, who wished you well. But you did not heed that speech, as a mortal will not take wholesome medicine. And now that very word, well spoken, has overtaken you. Not having followed the wholesome counsel of Vidura, Drona, Bhishma, and other well-wishers, the Kauravas go to their destruction. But this has already gone far beyond measure, lord of the peoples. Therefore hear from me in truth how the battle unfolded. At midday an exceedingly terrible fight arose, bringing ruin to the world, O king; hear my account.'
