Translation

Then enraged Bhima, especially fierce in the battle, reached the elephant division and began sending it to death. There, O Bharata, elephants struck down by Bhima's narachas fell, sank down, bellowed, and rushed about in every direction. Great elephants with severed trunks and legs, venerable one, cried out fearfully like birds and sank to the ground. Nakula and Sahadeva attacked the cavalry division. Those horses, with golden headbands, in golden harness and trappings, were seen struck down by the hundreds and thousands. The earth, O king, was strewn with fallen horses: tongueless, wheezing, moaning, and lifeless, they covered it with their manifold, mottled bodies, best of men. So too the earth, O Bharata, here and there shone terribly with horses slain by Arjuna, lord of the peoples; with broken chariots, severed banners, gleaming parasols, necklaces, golden ornaments, bracelets, and heads still wearing earrings; with cast-off turbans, standards, the fair frames of chariots, and the straps and reins of dead horses. Covered with all this, the earth shone as though with flowers in springtime. Thus was the destruction that befell the Pandavas too, O Bharata, when Bhishma, son of Shantanu, Drona, foremost of chariot-warriors, and also Ashvatthaman, Kripa, Kritavarman, and the rest grew enraged; and your men too suffered ruin.
