Then, by the command of the son of Dharma, all the armies, seized with fury, rushed upon Bhishma, wishing to kill him above all. Dhrishtadyumna, Shikhandin, and the great chariot-warrior Satyaki, with their forces arrayed, great king, advanced straight against Bhishma. Arjuna, the sons of Draupadi, and Chekitana in the fight went against all the kings whom Duryodhana had commanded. Valiant Abhimanyu, the great chariot-warrior Haidimba-Ghatotkacha, and enraged Bhimasena attacked the Kauravas. Divided into three columns, the Kauravas were struck down by the Pandavas in the battle; and likewise, on the side of the Kurus, king, their opponents too were struck down. Drona, foremost of chariot-warriors, enraged, charged upon the Somakas together with the Srinjayas, wishing to send them to the abode of Yama. There arose a great wail from the magnanimous Srinjayas, whom Drona, the bowman, son of Bharadvaja, was cutting down in battle. Many kshatriyas slain by Drona were seen on the field, writhing like men tormented by disease. Without pause were heard the sounds of moaning, weeping, and heavy roaring, like the voices of men parched by hunger. Likewise, among the Kauravas, mighty Bhimasena, enraged like a second Kala, wrought terrible destruction. As the armies struck one another down in the great battle, a terrible river began to flow, carrying a flood of blood. This great and dreadful battle of the Kurus and the Pandavas, great king, was swelling the kingdom of Yama.

Both sides take their blows at once: Drona destroys the Srinjayas, Bhima destroys the Kauravas. In this way the narrative strips away the illusion of a one-sided victory: when dharma is broken, the battlefield becomes a place where death collects its due from everyone.
