संजय उवाच
व्युष्टायां तु महाराज रजन्यां सर्वपार्थिवाः ॥
पाण्डवा धार्तराष्ट्राश् च अभिजग्मुः पितामहम् ॥
तं वीरशयने वीरं शयानं कुरुसत्तमम् ॥
अभिवाद्योपतस्थुर् वै क्षत्रियाः क्षत्रियर्षभम् ॥
कन्याश् चन्दनचूर्णैश् च लाजैर् माल्यैश् च सर्वशः ॥
स्त्रियो बालास् तथा वृद्धाः प्रेक्षकाश् च पृथग्जनाः ॥
समभ्ययुः शांतनवं भूतानीव तमोनुदम् ॥
तूर्याणि गणिका वारास् तथैव नटनर्तकाः ॥
उपानृत्यञ् जगुश् चैव वृद्धं कुरुपितामहम् ॥
उपारम्य च युद्धेभ्यः संनाहान् विप्रमुच्य च ॥
आयुधानि च निक्षिप्य सहिताः कुरुपाण्डवाः ॥
अन्वासत दुराधर्षं देवव्रतम् अरिंदमम् ॥
अन्योन्यं प्रीतिमन्तस् ते यथापूर्वं यथावयः ॥
सा पार्थिवशताकीर्णा समितिर् भीष्मशोभिता ॥
शुशुभे भारती दीप्ता दिवीवादित्यमण्डलम् ॥
विबभौ च नृपाणां सा पितामहम् उपासताम् ॥
देवानाम् इव देवेशं पितामहम् उपासताम् ॥

taṃ vīraśayane vīraṃ śayānaṃ kurusattamam ||
abhivādyopatasthur vai kṣatriyāḥ kṣatriyarṣabham ||
kanyāś candanacūrṇaiś ca lājair mālyaiś ca sarvaśaḥ ||
striyo bālās tathā vṛddhāḥ prekṣakāś ca pṛthagjanāḥ ||
samabhyayuḥ śāṃtanavaṃ bhūtānīva tamonudam ||
tūryāṇi gaṇikā vārās tathaiva naṭanartakāḥ ||
upānṛtyañ jaguś caiva vṛddhaṃ kurupitāmaham ||
upāramya ca yuddhebhyaḥ saṃnāhān vipramucya ca ||
āyudhāni ca nikṣipya sahitāḥ kurupāṇḍavāḥ ||
anvāsata durādharṣaṃ devavratam ariṃdamam ||
anyonyaṃ prītimantas te yathāpūrvaṃ yathāvayaḥ ||
sā pārthivaśatākīrṇā samitir bhīṣmaśobhitā ||
śuśubhe bhāratī dīptā divīvādityamaṇḍalam ||
vibabhau ca nṛpāṇāṃ sā pitāmaham upāsatām ||
devānām iva deveśaṃ pitāmaham upāsatām ||
Sanjaya said: "When the night had passed, O great king, all the lords of the earth — the Pandavas and the Dhartarashtras — came to their grandfather. The kshatriyas bowed to the best of the Kurus, the hero lying upon his bed of heroes, and stood before that bull among kshatriyas. Maidens with sandalwood powder, parched grain, and garlands, women, children, old men, onlookers, and common folk gathered from every side to the son of Shantanu, as living beings gather to the sun that dispels darkness. Instruments sounded; singers, courtesans, actors, and dancers danced and sang before the ancient grandfather of the Kurus. Having ceased from battle, removed their armor, and laid down their weapons, the Kurus and Pandavas sat together around the unassailable Devavrata, tamer of foes. They were well disposed toward one another as before, and took their places according to seniority and age. That assembly of the Bharatas, filled with hundreds of kings and adorned by Bhishma, shone like the sun's orb in the sky. Among the kings who attended upon the grandfather, it shone as the assembly of the gods shines around the lord of the gods."
