स संप्रहारस् तुमुलः संप्रवृत्तः सुदारुणः ॥
एकस्य च बहूनां च रथनागनरक्षयः ॥
ततः सायकवर्षेण पर्जन्य इव वृष्टिमान् ॥
परान् अवाकिरत् पार्थः पर्वतान् इव नीरदः ॥
ते चापि रथिनः सर्वे त्वरिताः कृतहस्तवत् ॥
अवाकिरन् बाणजालैस् ततः कृष्णधनंजयौ ॥
sa saṃprahāras tumulaḥ saṃpravṛttaḥ sudāruṇaḥ ||
ekasya ca bahūnāṃ ca rathanāganarakṣayaḥ ||
tataḥ sāyakavarṣeṇa parjanya iva vṛṣṭimān ||
parān avākirat pārthaḥ parvatān iva nīradaḥ ||
te cāpi rathinaḥ sarve tvaritāḥ kṛtahastavat ||
avākiran bāṇajālais tataḥ kṛṣṇadhanaṃjayau ||
That combat broke out, tumultuous, most terrible -- of one against many -- the destruction of chariots, elephants, and men. Then, like a raincloud, Partha showered the enemy with a rain of arrows, as a cloud showers mountains. And all those chariot-warriors, swiftly and with skilled hands, showered Krishna and Dhananjaya with networks of arrows.

"Ekasya ca bahūnāṃ ca", "of one and of many" -- the formula of an unequal fight: one Arjuna against a multitude. The image "parjanyaḥ iva vṛṣṭimān", like a raincloud pouring on the mountains, paints his generosity with arrows. It is telling that one pours a downpour upon many, while the many pour nets of arrows upon one. The verse teaches that righteous might, sheltered by the Lord, overcomes numbers: where God stands behind the one, he alone confronts the darkness, as a cloud confronts whole mountains; and inequality in number is nothing before inequality in truth and in God's protection.
