सैन्धवः पृष्ठतस् त्व् आसीत् सर्वसैन्यस्य भारत ॥
रक्षितः परमेष्वासैः कृपप्रभृतिभी रथैः ॥
तस्यास्तां चक्ररक्षौ द्वौ सैन्धवस्य बृहत्तमौ ॥
द्रौणिर् दक्षिणतो राजन् सूतपुत्रश् च वामतः ॥
saindhavaḥ pṛṣṭhatas tv āsīt sarvasainyasya bhārata ||
rakṣitaḥ parameṣvāsaiḥ kṛpaprabhṛtibhī rathaiḥ ||
tasyāstāṃ cakrarakṣau dvau saindhavasya bṛhattamau ||
drauṇir dakṣiṇato rājan sūtaputraś ca vāmataḥ ||
The Sindhu king (Jayadratha) was stationed at the rear of the whole army, O Bharata, guarded by superb archers, charioteers headed by Kripa. He had two guardians of the wheel, the mightiest of all — Drauni (Ashvatthaman) on the right, O king, and the son of the suta (Karna) on the left.

The heart of the defense is described: Jayadratha stands "prishtatah sarvasainyasya", behind the entire army, guarded by the mightiest — Ashvatthaman, Karna, Kripa. The guilty one is sheltered deepest of all. It is telling that the strongest are set to guard him — the very men Arjuna must break through. The verse teaches that untruth surrounds itself with ever more barriers: the heavier the guilt, the denser the shelter; yet even the mightiest guard is only a reprieve, for the avenger, blessed by the Lord, is already advancing toward the one hidden deepest within the array.
