तथा हि मुखवर्णो ऽयम् अनयोर् इति मेनिरे ॥
तावका दृश्य मुक्तौ तौ विक्रोशन्ति स्म सर्वतः ॥
द्रोणाद् आशीविषाकाराज् ज्वलिताद् इव पावकात् ॥
अन्येभ्यः पार्थिवेभ्यश् च भास्वन्ताव् इव भास्करौ ॥
तौ मुक्तौ सागरप्रख्याद् द्रोणानीकाद् अरिंदमौ ॥
अदृश्येतां मुदा युक्तौ समुत्तीर्यार्णवं यथा ॥
tathā hi mukhavarṇo 'yam anayor iti menire ||
tāvakā dṛśya muktau tau vikrośanti sma sarvataḥ ||
droṇād āśīviṣākārāj jvalitād iva pāvakāt ||
anyebhyaḥ pārthivebhyaś ca bhāsvantāv iva bhāskarau ||
tau muktau sāgaraprakhyād droṇānīkād ariṃdamau ||
adṛśyetāṃ mudā yuktau samuttīryārṇavaṃ yathā ||
"For such is the color of the faces of these two" — so thought your warriors, seeing those two freed, and cried out everywhere. Shining like two suns from Drona, in form like a venomous serpent, as if from a blazing fire, and from other kings — those two, freed from the ocean-like formation of Drona, the two scourges of the foe, appeared, filled with joy, as if having swum across the ocean.

By "mukhavarṇaḥ", the color of the face, the enemy reads the outcome: the joyful countenance of the two proclaims their triumph. "Samuttīrya arṇavam yathā", "as if having swum across the ocean": Drona's formation is the ocean, crossed through entirely. It is telling that inward joy shows itself in the face and speaks more truly than words. The verse teaches that the state of the soul betrays itself in one's bearing: the joy of those shielded by God shines upon their faces, announcing victory before it is accomplished; and one who has swum across the "ocean" of troubles with the Lord carries on his face a light by which even the enemy discerns the outcome.
