ततो युधिष्ठिरो द्रोणं नवत्या नतपर्वणाम् ॥
आजघ्ने भरतश्रेष्ठ सर्वमर्मसु भारत ॥
तं द्रोणः पञ्चविंशत्या निजघान स्तनान्तरे ॥
रोषितो भरतश्रेष्ठ कौन्तेयेन यशस्विना ॥
भूय एव तु विंशत्या सायकानां समाचिनोत् ॥
साश्वसूतध्वजं द्रोणः पश्यतां सर्वधन्विनाम् ॥
tato yudhiṣṭhiro droṇaṃ navatyā nataparvaṇām ||
ājaghne bharataśreṣṭha sarvamarmasu bhārata ||
taṃ droṇaḥ pañcaviṃśatyā nijaghāna stanāntare ||
roṣito bharataśreṣṭha kaunteyena yaśasvinā ||
bhūya eva tu viṃśatyā sāyakānāṃ samācinot ||
sāśvasūtadhvajaṃ droṇaḥ paśyatāṃ sarvadhanvinām ||
"Then Yudhishthira struck Drona with ninety smooth-jointed arrows in all his vital spots, O best of the Bharatas. Him Drona, enraged by the renowned son of Kunti, struck with twenty-five arrows between the breasts, O best of the Bharatas; and again covered him — with his horses, charioteer, and banner — with twenty more arrows, before the eyes of all the archers."

Yudhishthira, ordinarily so restrained, strikes with ninety arrows "sarvamarmasu," at all the teacher's vulnerable points: even the gentlest of the brothers is terrible in the hour of battle. But Drona answers with a master's superiority. It is telling that even the righteous king does not turn away from the fight when duty sets him face to face with his teacher. The verse teaches that dharma sometimes commands one to raise a weapon even against the venerated, and gentleness is not weakness: he who is patient is also capable of a terrible response, when duty demands it.
