ताञ् शरान् द्रोणमुक्तांस् तु शरवर्षेण पाण्डवः ॥
अवारयत धर्मात्मा दर्शयन् पाणिलाघवम् ॥
ततो द्रोणो भृशं क्रुद्धो धर्मराजस्य संयुगे ॥
चिच्छेद सहसा धन्वी धनुस् तस्य महात्मनः ॥
अथैनं छिन्नधन्वानं त्वरमाणो महारथः ॥
शरैर् अनेकसाहस्रैः पुरयाम् आस सर्वतः ॥
tāñ śarān droṇamuktāṃs tu śaravarṣeṇa pāṇḍavaḥ ||
avārayata dharmātmā darśayan pāṇilāghavam ||
tato droṇo bhṛśaṃ kruddho dharmarājasya saṃyuge ||
ciccheda sahasā dhanvī dhanus tasya mahātmanaḥ ||
athainaṃ chinnadhanvānaṃ tvaramāṇo mahārathaḥ ||
śarair anekasāhasraiḥ purayām āsa sarvataḥ ||
"Those arrows, loosed by Drona, the son of Pandu, righteous in soul, warded off with a shower of arrows, displaying the swiftness of his hand. Then Drona, greatly enraged at the King of Dharma in the battle, suddenly cut asunder the bow of that great-souled one. And him, his bow now cut, the great warrior, hastening, covered from every side with many thousands of arrows."

Even "dharmātmā," the righteous in soul, shows for a moment "pāṇilāghavam," the skill of the hand, yet Drona's mastery prevails, and the king's bow is cut asunder. It is telling that righteousness does not shield one from defeat in skill: virtue is not the same as superiority in combat. The verse teaches that purity of heart does not annul the laws of mastery; the righteous man may be surpassed by the more skillful, and then what is tested is not his ability but his steadfastness within the calamity itself.
