संधाय च चमूं द्रोणो भोजे भारं निवेश्य च ॥
अन्वधावद् रणे यत्तो युयुधानं युयुत्सया ॥
तथा तम् अनुधावन्तं युयुधानस्य पृष्ठतः ॥
न्यवारयन्त संक्रुद्धाः पाण्डुसैन्ये बृहत्तमाः ॥
समासाद्य तु हार्दिक्यं रथानां प्रवरं रथम् ॥
पाञ्चाला विगतोत्साहा भीमसेनपुरोगमाः ॥
विक्रम्य वारिता राजन् वीरेण कृतवर्मणा ॥
यतमानांस् तु तान् सर्वान् ईषद् विगतचेतसः ॥
अभितस् ताञ् शरौघेण क्लान्तवाहान् अवारयत् ॥
निगृहीतास् तु भोजेन भोजानीकेप्सवो रणे ॥
अतिष्ठन्न् आर्यवद् वीराः प्रार्थयन्तो महद् यशः ॥

nigṛhītās tu bhojena bhojānīkepsavo raṇe ||
atiṣṭhann āryavad vīrāḥ prārthayanto mahad yaśaḥ ||
And having arrayed his army and placed the burden on Bhoja, Drona, intent in battle, pursued Yuyudhana with eagerness for the fight. But as he pursued at Yuyudhana's back, the greatest warriors in the Pandu army, enraged, held him back. Meeting the son of Hridika, the foremost of chariot-warriors, the Panchalas, their ardor gone, led by Bhimasena... All those striving, slightly dazed, with their teams exhausted, he held back from every side with a flood of arrows. Held back by Bhoja, seeking in battle to reach Bhoja's ranks, the heroes stood in noble fashion, seeking great fame.

Even the disheartened Panchalas "atiṣṭhan āryavat… prārthayanto mahad yaśaḥ," stand nobly, seeking great fame: valor holds even when ardor has drained away. It is telling that nobility shows itself not in an easy rush of fervor, but in standing fast through weariness and dejection. The verse teaches that true honor is proven in exhaustion: not the one who charges into battle while still strong is noble, but the one who, wearied and disheartened, still does not abandon his post — standing fast through weakness is the true measure of valor.
