एतस्मिन्न् अन्तरे राजन् द्रोणः शस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥
अभ्ययाज् जवनैर् अश्वैर् युयुधानं महारथम् ॥
तम् उदीर्णं तथा दृष्ट्वा शैनेयं कुरुपुंगवाः ॥
द्रोणेनैव सह क्रुद्धाः सात्यकिं पर्यवारयन् ॥
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं कुरूणां सात्वतस्य च ॥
द्रोणस्य च रणे राजन् घोरं देवासुरोपमम् ॥
etasminn antare rājan droṇaḥ śastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ||
abhyayāj javanair aśvair yuyudhānaṃ mahāratham ||
tam udīrṇaṃ tathā dṛṣṭvā śaineyaṃ kurupuṃgavāḥ ||
droṇenaiva saha kruddhāḥ sātyakiṃ paryavārayan ||
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ kurūṇāṃ sātvatasya ca ||
droṇasya ca raṇe rājan ghoraṃ devāsuropamam ||
Meanwhile, O king, Drona, best of weapon-bearers, sped forth on swift horses against Yuyudhana, the great warrior. Seeing Shaineya so exalted, the bulls among the Kurus, enraged, surrounded Satyaki together with Drona. Then a battle broke out between the Kurus and Satvata and Drona, O king — terrible, like a war of gods and demons.

No sooner has one dread foe fallen than Drona himself, with the bulls of the Kurus, bears down on Satyaki: the tide of hostility does not ebb, and one victory only opens onto a new trial. It is telling that the faithful is given no respite on the way to his friend. The verse teaches that service to a great cause is unceasing struggle: behind every obstacle overcome stands the next, and one bound for something higher is called not to rest on victories but to gather his spirit again and again for the fight still to come.
