एवम् उक्तस् तथेत्य् उक्त्वा तव पुत्रस् तवात्मजम् ॥
अभ्यद्रवद् भीमसेनं व्यासक्तं विकिरञ् शरान् ॥
स भीमं नवभिर् बाणैर् अश्वान् अष्टभिर् अर्दयत् ॥
षड्भिः सूतं त्रिभिः केतुं पुनस् तं चापि सप्तभिः ॥
भीमसेनो ऽपि संक्रुद्धः साश्वयन्तारम् आशुगैः ॥
दुर्जयं भिन्नमर्माणम् अनयद् यमसादनम् ॥
स्वलंकृतं क्षितौ क्षुण्णं चेष्टमानं यथोरगम् ॥
रुदन्न् आर्तस् तव सुतं कर्णश् चक्रे प्रदक्षिणम् ॥

bhīmaseno 'pi saṃkruddhaḥ sāśvayantāram āśugaiḥ ||
durjayaṃ bhinnamarmāṇam anayad yamasādanam ||
svalaṃkṛtaṃ kṣitau kṣuṇṇaṃ ceṣṭamānaṃ yathoragam ||
rudann ārtas tava sutaṃ karṇaś cakre pradakṣiṇam ||
"Thus commanded, saying 'so be it,' your son [Durjaya] charged at your own son [Duryodhana's kin], Bhimasena, engaged in battle, scattering arrows. He struck Bhima with nine arrows, tormented the horses with eight, the driver with six, the banner with three, and him again with seven more. Bhimasena, in turn grown furious, with swift arrows sent Durjaya — together with his horses and charioteer, his vital points shattered — to the abode of Yama. Weeping in grief over him — well-adorned, trampled upon the ground, writhing like a serpent — Karna made a reverent circling around your son."

The brother sent to his aid only lies down himself — writhing like a serpent, adorned as if for a feast, not for death. It is significant that Karna, for whose sake he fell, weeps and honors him with a circumambulation: even in a relentless warrior grief for a wasted life still lives. The verse teaches that the price of persistence in wrongdoing is exacted from the innocent; and tears over the fallen do not atone for the deed that brought him to the grave.
