कर्णकौरवयोर् एवं रणे संभाषमाणयोः ॥
अर्जुनो निशितैर् बाणैर् जघान तव वाहिनीम् ॥
चिच्छेद तीक्ष्णाग्रमुखैः शूराणाम् अनिवर्तिनाम् ॥
भुजान् परिघसंकाशान् हस्तिहस्तोपमान् रणे ॥
शिरांसि च महाबाहुश् चिच्छेद निशितैः शरैः ॥
हस्तिहस्तान् हयग्रीवा रथाक्षांश् च समन्ततः ॥
शोणिताक्तान् हयारोहान् गृहीतप्रासतोमरान् ॥
क्षुरैश् चिच्छेद बीभत्सुर् द्विधैकैकं त्रिधैव च ॥

arjuno niśitair bāṇair jaghāna tava vāhinīm ||
ciccheda tīkṣṇāgramukhaiḥ śūrāṇām anivartinām ||
bhujān parighasaṃkāśān hastihastopamān raṇe ||
śirāṃsi ca mahābāhuś ciccheda niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
hastihastān hayagrīvā rathākṣāṃś ca samantataḥ ||
śoṇitāktān hayārohān gṛhītaprāsatomarān ||
kṣuraiś ciccheda bībhatsur dvidhaikaikaṃ tridhaiva ca ||
While Karna and the Kaurava [Duryodhana] were thus conversing in battle, Arjuna with sharp arrows struck down your army. With keen-tipped arrows he cut off the arms of the unyielding heroes — arms resembling iron bars, resembling an elephant's trunk, in battle. And the mighty-armed one cut off heads with sharp arrows, elephants' trunks, horses' necks, and chariot-axles on every side. Blood-drenched riders who had seized lances and javelins Bibhatsu cut with razor-arrows, each one in two, and even in three.

While the enemies confer, Arjuna acts: words lag behind deeds. It is telling that his onslaught sweeps away arms, heads, trunks, axles — all indiscriminately: singleness of purpose turns the whole army before him into nothing. The verse teaches that delay in speech is paid for in losses on the field; one bound by a deadline and a vow does not waste an hour on counsel but breaks through by action while the counselors are still seeking a way to stop him.
