संग्रामकोविदं पार्थं सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः ॥
अभीताः पर्यवर्तन्त व्यादितास्यम् इवान्तकम् ॥
सैन्धवं पृष्ठतः कृत्वा जिघांसन्तो ऽर्जुनाच्युतौ ॥
सूर्यास्तमयम् इच्छन्तो लोहितायति भास्करे ॥
ते भुजैर् भोगिभोगाभैर् धनूंष्य् आयम्य सायकान् ॥
मुमुचुः सूर्यरश्म्याभाञ् शतशः फल्गुनं प्रति ॥
तान् अस्तान् अस्यमानांश् च किरीटी युद्धदुर्मदः ॥
द्विधा त्रिधाष्टधैकैकं छित्त्वा विव्याध तान् रणे ॥

saindhavaṃ pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā jighāṃsanto 'rjunācyutau ||

te bhujair bhogibhogābhair dhanūṃṣy āyamya sāyakān ||
mumucuḥ sūryaraśmyābhāñ śataśaḥ phalgunaṃ prati ||
tān astān asyamānāṃś ca kirīṭī yuddhadurmadaḥ ||
dvidhā tridhāṣṭadhaikaikaṃ chittvā vivyādha tān raṇe ||
All those expert in combat, fearless, surrounded Partha, skilled in battle, as if it were Antaka with his jaws agape. Having placed Saindhava behind themselves, longing to kill Arjuna and Achyuta, wishing for the setting sun as it reddened, they, with arms resembling the coils of serpents, drew their bows and loosed arrows resembling the rays of the sun by the hundreds at Phalguna. Those arrows, loosed and hurled, the Diademed one, fierce in battle, cut each one into two, three, or eight pieces, and pierced them in the fight.

The enemies surround Arjuna as though he were Death with jaws agape, yet they hide Jayadratha behind their backs: fear betrays their doom. It is telling that the reddening sun presses both sides — for some it is hope, for the other, a deadline. The verse teaches that hiding the condemned behind others' backs does not save him; a host of defenders only delays the reckoning where, against them, stands a resolve as inexorable as Death itself.
