And the chiefs among horses and elephants fell by the thousands, banners, parasols, bows, fly-whisks, and heads. Like dry brush before a rising fire, burning your army, Partha swiftly made the earth drenched with blood. Having turned your force into an army with most of its warriors slain, the mighty, unassailable one, of true valor, reached Saindhava.

Arjuna, like fire through dry brush, burns through the army and at last reaches Jayadratha: an unyielding will presses through to its goal past every obstacle. It is telling that the path to a single man is paved with thousands of the fallen: the price of a fulfilled vow proves immense. The verse teaches that a determination that knows no obstacle is fearsome in its power; but its victory is bought at the cost of a sea of other lives, and behind the inevitability of righteous retribution stands the bitterness of universal ruin.
