व्यायच्छन्तो हताः शूरा मदर्थे ये ऽपराङ्मुखाः ॥
यतमानाः परं शक्त्या विजेतुम् अहितान् मम ॥
तेषां गत्वाहम् आनृण्यम् अद्य शक्त्या परंतप ॥
तर्पयिष्यामि तान् एव जलेन यमुनाम् अनु ॥
सत्यं ते प्रतिजानामि सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वर ॥
इष्टापूर्तेन च शपे वीर्येण च सुतैर् अपि ॥
निहत्य तान् रणे सर्वान् पाञ्चालान् पाण्डवैः सह ॥
शान्तिं लब्धास्मि तेषां वा रणे गन्ता सलोकताम् ॥
vyāyacchanto hatāḥ śūrā madarthe ye 'parāṅmukhāḥ ||
yatamānāḥ paraṃ śaktyā vijetum ahitān mama ||
teṣāṃ gatvāham ānṛṇyam adya śaktyā paraṃtapa ||
tarpayiṣyāmi tān eva jalena yamunām anu ||
satyaṃ te pratijānāmi sarvaśastrabhṛtāṃ vara ||
iṣṭāpūrtena ca śape vīryeṇa ca sutair api ||
nihatya tān raṇe sarvān pāñcālān pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ||
śāntiṃ labdhāsmi teṣāṃ vā raṇe gantā salokatām ||
'Striving, the heroes who did not turn away from my cause have fallen, having striven with all their might to overcome my foes. Before them, O scorcher of foes, having discharged my debt to the extent of my power, I shall now feed them with memorial water along the Yamuna. Truly I swear to you, O best of all warriors — I swear by the merit of good deeds, by valor, and by my sons: having struck down in battle all of them, the Panchalas together with the Pandavas, I shall find peace; or else, falling in battle, I shall attain the same world as them.'

Duryodhana intends to pay his debt to the fallen not with peace but with fresh bloodshed — he swears to annihilate the Panchalas and Pandavas. It is telling that his sincere grief brings forth not reconciliation but a redoubled resolve for slaughter. The verse teaches that guilt not turned toward repentance seeks a false redemption in vengeance; and one who wishes to "repay" the fallen with new deaths only continues the very evil for which he blames himself, finding no way out of the circle of blood.
