बलार्णवौ ततस् तौ तु समेयातां निशामुखे ॥
वातोद्धूतौ क्षुब्धसत्त्वौ भैरवौ सागराव् इव ॥
ततो द्रोणं महाराज पाञ्चाल्यः पञ्चभिः शरैः ॥
विव्याध हृदये तूर्णं सिंहनादं ननाद च ॥
तं द्रोणः पञ्चविंशत्या विद्ध्वा भारत संयुगे ॥
चिच्छेदान्येन भल्लेन धनुर् अस्य महाप्रभम् ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नस् तु निर्विद्धो द्रोणेन भरतर्षभ ॥
उत्ससर्ज धनुस् तूर्णं संदश्य दशनच्छदम् ॥
balārṇavau tatas tau tu sameyātāṃ niśāmukhe ||
vātoddhūtau kṣubdhasattvau bhairavau sāgarāv iva ||
tato droṇaṃ mahārāja pāñcālyaḥ pañcabhiḥ śaraiḥ ||
vivyādha hṛdaye tūrṇaṃ siṃhanādaṃ nanāda ca ||
taṃ droṇaḥ pañcaviṃśatyā viddhvā bhārata saṃyuge ||
cicchedānyena bhallena dhanur asya mahāprabham ||
dhṛṣṭadyumnas tu nirviddho droṇena bharatarṣabha ||
utsasarja dhanus tūrṇaṃ saṃdaśya daśanacchadam ||
Those two armies, like oceans stirred up by the wind, with creatures in turmoil, met at the edge of night, like two terrible seas. Then Drona, O great king, was pierced in the heart by the man of Panchala [Dhrishtadyumna] with five arrows, swiftly, and he let out a lion's roar. Drona, having pierced him with twenty-five arrows in the clash, O Bharata, cut his brightly gleaming bow with another broad-headed shaft. Dhrishtadyumna, pierced by Drona, O bull among the Bharatas, quickly cast aside his bow, biting his lip.

The two armies meet "like two seas stirred up by the wind": the battle is likened to blind elemental force. It is telling that Dhrishtadyumna, deprived of his bow, "bites his lip" — the helpless fury of one thwarted in his cherished task. The verse teaches that even one set upon an appointed goal meets obstacles and setbacks; the path to what is foreordained is not smooth, and one destined to accomplish something great passes through humiliation and helpless anger before his hour arrives.
