एवम् उक्तो ययौ पार्थान् पुत्रेण तव सौबलः ॥
महत्या सेनया सार्धं तव पुत्रैस् तथा विभो ॥
प्रियार्थं तव पुत्राणां दिधक्षुः पाण्डुनन्दनान् ॥
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं तावकानां परैः सह ॥
प्रयाते सौबले राजन् पाण्डवानाम् अनीकिनीम् ॥
बलेन महता युक्तः सूतपुत्रस् तु सात्वतम् ॥
अभ्ययात् त्वरितं युद्धे किरञ् शरशतान् बहून् ॥
तथैव पाण्डवाः सर्वे सात्यकिं पर्यवारयन् ॥
महद् युद्धं तदासीत् तु द्रोणस्य निशि भारत ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नेन शूरेण पाञ्चालैश् च महात्मनः ॥

balena mahatā yuktaḥ sūtaputras tu sātvatam ||
abhyayāt tvaritaṃ yuddhe kirañ śaraśatān bahūn ||
tathaiva pāṇḍavāḥ sarve sātyakiṃ paryavārayan ||
mahad yuddhaṃ tadāsīt tu droṇasya niśi bhārata ||
dhṛṣṭadyumnena śūreṇa pāñcālaiś ca mahātmanaḥ ||
Thus instructed by your son, Saubala went against the Parthas together with a great army and with your sons, O lord, for the sake of your sons, wishing to consume the sons of Pandu. Then the battle broke out between your men and the enemies. When Saubala advanced, O king, against the army of the Pandavas, the son of the suta [Karna], joined with a great army, swiftly attacked the Sattvata [Satyaki] in battle, showering many hundreds of arrows; so too all the Pandavas surrounded Satyaki. Great was the battle then of Drona in the night, O Bharata, with the brave Dhrishtadyumna and the great-souled Panchalas.

The chapter closes with the battle split in two: Shakuni leads the host against the Pandavas, Karna presses Satyaki, Drona fights the Panchalas — the war branches into separate streams, each consuming its own victims. It is telling that what drives it all is the "wish to consume the sons of Pandu" — hatred as the sole spring of action. The verse teaches that strife, once grown large, branches without end, drawing ever more forces in; and as long as it is ruled only by the thirst to destroy the enemy, it multiplies slaughter without bringing peace or rest any closer.
