संजय उवाच
विद्रुतं स्वबलं दृष्ट्वा वध्यमानं महात्मभिः ॥
क्रोधेन महताविष्टः पुत्रस् तव विशां पते ॥
अभ्येत्य सहसा कर्णं द्रोणं च जयतां वरम् ॥
अमर्षवशम् आपन्नो वाक्यज्ञो वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् ॥
भवद्भ्याम् इह संग्रामो क्रुद्धाभ्यां संप्रवर्तितः ॥
आहवे निहतं दृष्ट्वा सैन्धवं सव्यसाचिना ॥
निहन्यमानां पाण्डूनां बलेन मम वाहिनीम् ॥
भूत्वा तद्विजये शक्ताव् अशक्ताव् इव पश्यतः ॥

bhavadbhyām iha saṃgrāmo kruddhābhyāṃ saṃpravartitaḥ ||
āhave nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā saindhavaṃ savyasācinā ||
nihanyamānāṃ pāṇḍūnāṃ balena mama vāhinīm ||
bhūtvā tadvijaye śaktāv aśaktāv iva paśyataḥ ||
Seeing his own army routed, being slaughtered by the great souls, your son, O lord of peoples, seized by great wrath, suddenly approached Karna and Drona, best of victors, and, overcome with indignation, the knower of speech spoke this word: "This battle was begun by you two, in your wrath, when you saw Saindhava [Jayadratha] slain in battle by Savyasachin [Arjuna]. My army, being slaughtered by the might of the Pandavas -- though capable of overcoming them, you watch as if powerless."

It is telling that his reproach is unjust: it was not Drona and Karna who unleashed the war, but his own greed. The verse teaches that the guilty in distress seek the fault outside themselves; suffering defeat, a man blames not himself but those who serve him -- and the habit of shifting blame onto others is the sure companion of one who will not see the root of his misfortune in himself.
