विव्यधुः सोकास् तूर्णं न्ताच् वृष्टिभिः
तो द्रोणो ऽरत् प्राणान् क्षत्रियाणां विशां ते
श्मिभिर् भास्करो राजंस् साम् भा
द्रोणे ध्यमानानां पाञ्चालानां विशां ते
शुश्रुवे तुमुलः ब्दः क्रोताम् रेरम्
पुत्रान् न्ये पितॄन् न्ये भ्रातॄन् न्ये मातुलान्
भागिनेयान् स्यांश् था संन्धिबान्धवान्
त्सृज्योत्सृज्य च्छन्ति त्वरिता जीवितेप्सवः

dṛṣṭvā ca samare droṇaṃ nighnantaṃ pāṇḍavīṃ camūm ||
vivyadhuḥ somas tūrṇaṃ samantāc charavṛṣṭibhiḥ ||
tato droṇo 'harat prāṇān kṣatriṇāṃ viśāṃ pate ||
raśmibhir bhāskaro jaṃs tamam iva bhārata ||
droṇena vadhyanāṃ ñcānāṃ viśāṃ pate ||
śuśruve tumulaḥ śabdaḥ krośam itaretaram ||
putrān anye pitṝn anye bhrātṝn anye ca tulān ||
bhāginen vayasyāṃś ca tathā saṃbandhindhavān ||
utsṛjyotsṛjya gacchanti tvari vitepsavaḥ ||

Translation

And seeing Drona in the fight slaying the army of the Pandavas, the Somakas swiftly pierced him from every side with showers of arrows. Then Drona took the lives of the kshatriyas, O lord of peoples, as the sun with its rays dispels the darkness, O Bharata. Of the Panchalas being slain by Drona, O lord of peoples, a tumultuous sound was heard of men crying out to one another -- some for sons, others for fathers, others still for brothers and uncles, for nephews and for friends, and likewise for kinsmen and relatives...
