दृष्ट्वा च समरे द्रोणं निघ्नन्तं पाण्डवीं चमूम् ॥
विव्यधुः सोमकास् तूर्णं समन्ताच् छरवृष्टिभिः ॥
ततो द्रोणो ऽहरत् प्राणान् क्षत्रियाणां विशां पते ॥
रश्मिभिर् भास्करो राजंस् तमसाम् इव भारत ॥
द्रोणेन वध्यमानानां पाञ्चालानां विशां पते ॥
शुश्रुवे तुमुलः शब्दः क्रोशताम् इतरेतरम् ॥
पुत्रान् अन्ये पितॄन् अन्ये भ्रातॄन् अन्ये च मातुलान् ॥
भागिनेयान् वयस्यांश् च तथा संबन्धिबान्धवान् ॥
उत्सृज्योत्सृज्य गच्छन्ति त्वरिता जीवितेप्सवः ॥

tato droṇo 'harat prāṇān kṣatriyāṇāṃ viśāṃ pate ||

droṇena vadhyamānānāṃ pāñcālānāṃ viśāṃ pate ||
śuśruve tumulaḥ śabdaḥ krośatām itaretaram ||
putrān anye pitṝn anye bhrātṝn anye ca mātulān ||
bhāgineyān vayasyāṃś ca tathā saṃbandhibāndhavān ||
utsṛjyotsṛjya gacchanti tvaritā jīvitepsavaḥ ||
And seeing Drona in the fight slaying the army of the Pandavas, the Somakas swiftly pierced him from every side with showers of arrows. Then Drona took the lives of the kshatriyas, O lord of peoples, as the sun with its rays dispels the darkness, O Bharata. Of the Panchalas being slain by Drona, O lord of peoples, a tumultuous sound was heard of men crying out to one another -- some for sons, others for fathers, others still for brothers and uncles, for nephews and for friends, and likewise for kinsmen and relatives...

Drona scatters the host "as the sun scatters darkness": a single teacher stands for a whole army. It is telling that the Mahabharata honors valor even in one who serves untruth: Drona is fierce and radiant as the sun, though he fights for Duryodhana. The verse teaches that the power and brilliance of a gift do not depend on the rightness of the cause to which it is given; and the tragedy is that the greatest of teachers turns his light to destruction -- a sun that scatters not the darkness of ignorance but living lives.
