युधिष्ठिरसमाज्ञप्ताः सृञ्जयानां महारथाः ॥
अभ्यद्रवन्त संयत्ता भारद्वाजं जिघांसवः ॥
तान् समापततः सर्वान् भारद्वाजो महारथः ॥
अभ्यद्रवत वेगेन मर्तव्यम् इति निश्चितः ॥
प्रयाते सत्यसंधे तु समकम्पत मेदिनी ॥
ववुर् वाताः सनिर्घातास् त्रासयन्तो वरूथिनीम् ॥
yudhiṣṭhirasamājñaptāḥ sṛñjayānāṃ mahārathāḥ ||
abhyadravanta saṃyattā bhāradvājaṃ jighāṃsavaḥ ||
tān samāpatataḥ sarvān bhāradvājo mahārathaḥ ||
abhyadravata vegena martavyam iti niścitaḥ ||
prayāte satyasaṃdhe tu samakampata medinī ||
vavur vātāḥ sanirghātās trāsayanto varūthinīm ||
Instructed by Yudhishthira, the great charioteers of the Srinjayas attacked, having girded themselves, upon Bharadvaja, eager to kill him. Upon them, all rushing on, Bharadvaja, the great charioteer, rushed with speed, resolved: "One must die." When Satyasandha [Drona, true to his vow] set forth, the earth trembled; winds blew with thunderclaps, terrifying the army.

The moment Drona resolves "one must die," nature answers with a trembling earth and thundering winds: the passing of a great soul does not go unnoticed by the world. It is telling how the two things join — the inward resolve, "martavyam iti niscitah," the readiness to meet death, and the outward omens: spirit and universe sound in accord. The verse teaches that readiness to give up life for duty transfigures death into something solemn; one who has inwardly accepted his hour meets it not as a victim but as master of his own end.
