तथोक्त्वा योगम् आस्थाय ज्योतिर्भूतो महातपाः ॥
दिवम् आक्रामद् आचार्यः सद्भिः सह दुराक्रमम् ॥
द्वौ सूर्याव् इति नो बुद्धिर् आसीत् तस्मिंस् तथा गते ॥
एकाग्रम् इव चासीद् धि ज्योतिर्भिः पूरितं नभः ॥
समपद्यत चार्काभे भारद्वाजनिशाकरे ॥
निमेषमात्रेण च तज् ज्योतिर् अन्तरधीयत ॥
आसीत् किलकिलाशब्दः प्रहृष्टानां दिवौकसाम् ॥
ब्रह्मलोकं गते द्रोणे धृष्टद्युम्ने च मोहिते ॥
tathoktvā yogam āsthāya jyotirbhūto mahātapāḥ ||
divam ākrāmad ācāryaḥ sadbhiḥ saha durākramam ||
dvau sūryāv iti no buddhir āsīt tasmiṃs tathā gate ||
ekāgram iva cāsīd dhi jyotirbhiḥ pūritaṃ nabhaḥ ||
samapadyata cārkābhe bhāradvājaniśākare ||
nimeṣamātreṇa ca taj jyotir antaradhīyata ||
āsīt kilakilāśabdaḥ prahṛṣṭānāṃ divaukasām ||
brahmalokaṃ gate droṇe dhṛṣṭadyumne ca mohite ||
Thus having spoken, established in yoga, having become light, the great ascetic, the Acharya ascended to heaven -- hard to attain -- together with the righteous. "Two suns" -- such was our thought, when he thus departed; and the sky, filled with lights, seemed as if gathered into one; and Bharadvaja-luminary became sun-like. And in a single instant that light vanished; a jubilant roar arose from the rejoicing celestials, when Drona had gone to the world of Brahma, while Dhrishtadyumna fell into bewilderment.

Drona departs "having become light" -- jyotirbhutah -- and the sky seems to bear two suns: the death of the sage is shown as an ascent, not a fall. Significant is that the celestials rejoice -- divaukasam -- welcoming one who left the battle for the higher path. The verse teaches that for one established in yoga the body's end is a dawn, not a dusk; and while the world below grieves and grows dark, the higher worlds celebrate the return of their own.
