The verse is taken word for word from the Muṇḍaka (2.2.8), and it is one of the most famous in all upaniṣadic literature; we cited it when reading the Varāha (5.64), where it was cited via the Bhāgavatam. It is worth examining it precisely, for it contains three consequences and one cause. The consequences: the knot is untied, doubts are cut, deeds are exhausted.
The one cause: tasmin dṛṣṭe, "when He is seen." It is worth noting that the cause is named not in the genitive or instrumental case, but in the independent locative: "in that He is seen." That is, the three consequences occur of themselves, as soon as the one thing has occurred; and no separate action is required for them.
The Vaiṣṇava side stands on this and cites it constantly; and that a tight knot is drawn tighter by effort but is untied by what one has seen was discussed when reading the Varāha (5.64). Let us add the last word: para-avare, "the higher and the lower." This word is deliberately ambiguous: one can read "in Him who is higher and lower," or "in Him who is beyond the higher and the lower."
The Vaiṣṇava side holds the first, and interprets it thus: He is both — both transcendent and present in the very lowest; and that īśvaro jīva-kalayā praviṣṭaḥ was discussed when reading the Yājñavalkya (4). Read this way, the verse says that what unties is not abstract seeing, but recognizing Him in the high and the low at once.
