In the list a name worth attention stands: Agastya. This is one of the most famous sages of the traditions — the one who drank the ocean; the one who bent Mount Vindhya; the one whose wife Lopāmudrā composed a hymn of the Ṛgveda (1.179) and gave her name to the first of the twelve traditions of this mantra. The list traces traditions to people, not to gods. Manu, Kubera, and the moon are of a different order, but Agastya and Lopāmudrā are husband and wife, both composed hymns and both stand in this list.
This detail deserves mention. In a book where everything speaks of the union of Śiva and Śakti, two of the twelve traditions are traced to a real couple — to a sage and his wife, whom the Ṛgveda speaks of as living people, with their own conversation and their own disagreement. Such details bring the abstract back to earth. The union of Śiva and Śakti can be understood however one likes; but Agastya and Lopāmudrā are two people who had a home, and by them one can see what this book, with its triangles and syllables, is really speaking of.
