Translation

The number fifty is named, and it too is no accident: fifty is the number of letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Behind this stands a conviction pervasive in Indian books about the word: the alphabet is not a set of marks but the composition of speech, and speech is what holds the world up. Hence the fifty letters are often depicted as a garland, and a garland of fifty as speech itself.
Vyoma-vyāpin, "filling space," is a special mantra following the five; its name means one who pervades the void. This detail about the letters deserves particular note, for it points to a curious shift of view. At first the rudrākṣa was a tear, that is, a thing arising from feeling; now it has become a letter, that is, a part of speech.
This shift shows how such piety works. An object, once caught up in a code, draws to itself every meaning available: it becomes a tear, and a letter, and a varṇa, and a tattva — and every new generation adds its own. The Vaiṣṇava side knows this of itself too and takes it calmly, but with a reservation worth remembering. Meanings multiply easily and are therefore cheap; and there is no way to test them, for each rests only on its own elegance.
Hence the rule it holds to, worth repeating: where tradition diverges from the text, hold to the text; and where interpretations are many, prefer the one that leads to service, not the one that is more beautiful.
