In a Śaiva book, written by a Śaiva for Śaivas, the twelve-faced seed is called mahā-viṣṇu-svarūpaka, "having the form of Mahā-Viṣṇu," and of it is said tat param, "that highest." This deserves noting, but let us not triumph over it, and here is why. Such mentions in other traditions' books are data, not proof. We already saw the reverse in the Bhasma-jābāla: there Viṣṇu is depicted bowing to Śiva; every community places its own at the center and the rest around it.
What truly deserves examining here is Viṣṇu's connection with the dvādaśa-āditya, the twelve Ādityas, for this is no invention but very old. In the Ṛgveda, Viṣṇu is one of the Ādityas, the solar gods, and the youngest at that — Upendra, "Indra's junior." There he is famed for the three strides with which he traversed the world — tredhā vidadhe padam; and his whole character is that of one who passes through: the name viṣṇu is derived from viś, "to enter, to pervade."
This is why the twelve faces were joined precisely to him: twelve suns for the twelve months, and Viṣṇu among them. The Vaiṣṇava side does not conceal this Vedic origin and is not ashamed of it; but it says the figure has unfolded, and that the one who takes three strides in the Ṛgveda turns out, in the Bhāgavatam, to be a person, not merely a power. It recognizes this development not as a distortion but as an unfolding — and on this it is disputed, and the dispute is a fair one.
The word bibharti, "bears, holds," in the final foot, deserves note in itself. From the same root bhṛt comes bhartā, "one who maintains, a husband," and bibharti is a verb not of power but of care: to hold, as one holds in one's arms.
