Brahma said: "Serpents fierce, of terrible might, exceedingly venomous—there are many; and I, wishing well for beings, did not prevent that curse then. Those that are biting, base, wicked-natured and exceedingly venomous—destruction will befall them, but not those who live by dharma. And for what reason deliverance from that great fear will come to the serpents—listen, when the time arrives. In the Yayavara lineage will be born a wise and great sage, renowned as Jaratkaru, radiant, of subdued senses. To that Jaratkaru a son will be born, a great ascetic named Astika; he it is who will then stop that sacrifice, and there those serpents that are righteous will be delivered." The gods said: "In whom, O god, will that best of sages, the great ascetic Jaratkaru, the mighty one, beget a great-souled son?" Brahma said: "In a maiden of his own name, that mighty one, best of the twice-born, will beget mighty offspring, O gods." Elapatra said: "'So be it,' the gods then said to the Grandsire; and having spoken thus, the gods departed, and the god the Grandsire too. So I see it thus, O Vasuki: your sister, renowned as Jaratkaru—give her to that sage who begs for her as alms, for the appeasing of the serpents' fear, to that sage of good vows. Such is the deliverance of which I have heard."
