Suta said: "Having spoken thus to his ancestors, the sage wandered the earth, but could not find a wife, [for all thought]: 'He is old,' O Shaunaka. Then, [falling] into despair and urged on thus by his ancestors, he grew desperate; and going into the forest, he cried out loudly, himself in great sorrow: 'Let all beings that exist here -- unmoving and moving, and those that are unseen -- hear my word! The ancestors, afflicted with grief, urge me, who abide in severe austerity, saying: "Marry" -- wishing good for themselves. Seeking marriage, I go about the whole earth begging for a maiden as alms; poor, living in hardship, urged on by my ancestors. Whatever being of those I have named here has a maiden -- let them give me a maiden, [me] who wander in every direction. That maiden who bears the same name as mine, who is given to me as alms, and whom I will not have to support -- give me such a maiden.' Then those serpents who had been set to watch over Jaratkaru, taking that news, reported it to Vasuki. Hearing from them, that king of serpents, taking the adorned maiden, came with her to the forest -- close to that sage. There he gave the maiden as alms to that great soul; but he did not accept her at once, O brahmin -- doubting: 'Is she not perhaps of the same name?' and 'Might I not have to support her, since there was no agreement about it?' And, [being inclined] toward liberation, he was divided in mind about accepting [the wife]. Then, O descendant of Bhrigu, he asked the maiden's name and said: 'I will not support her.'"
