Here begins the snake sacrifice (sarpa-sattra) — the fruit of Janamejaya's resolve for vengeance. It is notable that the priests present his plan as though already foreordained: ‘there is a sacrifice sent down by the gods, and its performer is you.’ Thus the king's vengeance is clothed in the garment of a rite foretold in the Puranas. A duality appears here: on one hand, what is preordained is fulfilled (even the death of the serpents is woven into the pattern of fate); on the other, the king's heart is moved by wrath, not by dharma. Note that the king longs to burn not Takshaka alone, but “together with his kin” — already here an excess shows itself, one that will turn just retribution into the slaughter of an entire race. The burning by fire is a kind of mirror: the father was burned by the fire of poison, and now the son plans to burn his enemy with sacrificial fire; thus violence begets violence by the law of karma. And though the rite is clothed in sanctity, its very aim — extermination — carries within it the seed of adharma, which will require the intervention of the righteous Astika.
